Athenry Ladies History: First Ladies Leaving Certs by Ronan Killeen

The Convenant, as you can see in the middle of the picture of what is called today as the Tec block (in my day anyways as it has a woodwork room in it!). It was originally the first secondary school in Athenry.

Originally Leaving Cert classes took place in the Canton Hall and the Convent. Up to 1950 there had been no exam centre in Athenry as during that era students had to board in Tuam for two weeks at exam time. The Presentation College Secondary school was built in 1949  by the Stuarts of Galway.
